Falling for Winter Your hosts – Pat Huckins & Dave Vaughn
The summer season is behind us and now as we venture into a New Year, we are settling into a wintery world. At Moosetracks Family Cottages you can enjoy all the outdoors you want and then, at the end of the day, head back to your cozy cottage and curl up with a good book and a steaming mug of tea or your favorite cold-weather beverage. It's time to enjoy this beautiful area at a pristine time of year promising plenty of snow for all sorts of fun!
Moosetracks cottages perch gracefully along the half-mile shore frontage and are located on 39 woodsy acres at the end of a mile-long, lightly traveled private gravel road. To get there, follow the Lily Bay Road north out of Greenville and after about six miles, take a right at the sign (you'll see it on your right) for Moosetracks Family Cottages. The grounds are predominately in mixed woods of cedar, spruce and white birch. There are wooded bogs at either end of the property. Many large boulders, left by the receding glaciers, can be found scattered around the grounds. Pat and Dave have been busy working on their numerous snowshoe trails about the property – you can get plenty of exercise on any one of these winter walks. Bring binoculars or a camera – you might spy any number of creatures that venture out on a wintery day, be it moose, deer or perhaps a Canada Lynx might cross your path; you never know! Snowshoe Hare are abundant. The winter birds are around as well, Canada Jays, sometimes known as Gorbies are known to be very tame and might follow you as you trek along the trails. Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, Pine Siskins and Chickadees are a common sight too. You might even spy a Great Horned or Barred Owl toward the end of the day.
Ice fishing at Prong Pond is always great fun – and the pond is only steps away from your comfortable cottage retreat. From your porch in the evenings, you can see the Milky Way flung like a banner across the night sky and there are many evenings when Northern Lights make their appearance, dancing and shimmering like magical curtains of green, red or white. The air is so clear it feels like you can almost reach out and touch them. Moosetracks Family Cottages welcomes snowmobilers and their families. The cottages are located near the ITS trails making it easy for you to explore the vast forests surrounding Moosehead Lake. Plan a day trip to Pittston Farm or head west for a scenic trip to Bingham. It's all within easy reach. Snowmobiles and all the gear you need can be rented locally, if you like.
If you enjoy cross-country skiing, nearby Lily Bay State Park has trails for you to explore. Make a day of it and pack a winter picnic to enjoy on the frozen shores of Moosehead Lake. Call us to arrange for good times and good memories. You'll surely fall for winter at Moosetracks Family Cottages. |
